Hello My Name Is...
Welcome to My Classroom
I am a 6th grade math teacher at KIS. My 6th graders are very near and dear to my heart. Together we will succeed!
This is my nineteenth year teaching. Previously, I have taught in the Rowan-Salisbury School district at China Grove Elementary for seventeen years. During my time in the Rowan-Salisbury School district, I've taught grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, served as a Space Camp coordinator for NASA, science fair coordinator, and spelling bee coordinator for my school(s). My experience also includes being on the school improvement team, grade level chair, PBIS chair and team member, anti-bullying committee member, climate committee, and beginning teacher mentor.
Feel free to contact me by email at Christina.Coley@kcs.k12.nc.us or by school phone at (704) 932-4161.
College(s) Attended/Degrees Earned:
I graduated from Pfeiffer University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. My professional training includes the Olweus Anti-Bullying program, PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System), First In Math certification from Meredith College, Reading Foundations, Fountas-Pinnell Literacy Framework for guided reading, Lee Ann Nickleson Differentiation Training, Apple technology training and various technology programs.
I believe that all students can learn regardless of their social or economic background. Students need a safe, nurturing environment with strong guidance to be successful.
What We are Studying:
Fractions, decimals and ratios are everywhere. Students should be aware that fractions and ratios are found in kitchens through recipes, measurement, and proportions. Students have recently learned about unit rates and how to find these on shelf tags in food stores. Knowing unit rates of products will help them understand which products are the better buy. Ask your child to help you shop using unit rates. Students will also be able to apply percentages to purchases. Let them help you figure out costs when items are on sale by using the % off the original price.
Continue to help your child understand positive and negative integers through checking/savings accounts, bills, above and below sea level locations, and temperatures on thermometers will reinforce some of the skills learned in our class and make real world connections.
Encourage your child to recognize and use of decimals outside of school such as money, prices at the stores, restaurant menus, and measurements on food containers. Also, have your child apply coupons to determine prices when shopping. They can practice these skills in daily life outside of school.
**Students do have interactive math notebooks. They are expected to refer to their notes for a resource, and review notes daily. Please ask your child to share his/her math notebook with you weekly.
Things parents/guardians can do to help:
- Check planners each night for important information. Please sign them each night.
- Ask your child to explain their homework to you before and after it is completed.
- Review weekly papers with your child that are sent home every Tuesday in the orange folders.
- Sign and return all forms back to school in a timely manner.
- Please read with your children 20 minutes per night.
- Sign up for Class DoJo and check your child's behavior report daily.
- Join our "Remind" app for notifications about homework and upcoming events.
- Read the standards to know what your child is expected to learn.

Please join the "Remind" app and "Class DoJo". These are free apps for your cell phone to keep you informed. Parents who join "Remind" will be able to text/message me directly and receive daily texts for homework assignments, and other important reminders. "Class DoJo" also allows parents to send and receive messages, see what's going on in class and monitor your student's behavior. Parents will only be able to view their own student's information. It is private and secure. I will provide you an access code for your student's information for "Class DoJo". You can click on the links below to access the sites. Again these sites have free apps for your phone.
