MAT-BALL AND FITNESS
This month our 5th and 6th grade students will be spending time getting ready for the end of year fitness tests. We will be increasing the fitness portion of class working on improving cardio respiratory endurance, muscle strength and endurance, and student flexibility. Activities will include Mileage Markers, jump rope and jogging activities and Mat Ball. Mat Ball is a variation of kickball that encourages students to stay on base and complete as many laps as possible while their team is kicking.
January 17th - January 27th
Team handball originated in Europe in the early 1900's. It is a fast paced game combining the sports of soccer, basketball, water polo, and hockey. During this game students are only allowed three steps with the ball or three seconds before they must decide to pass the ball to a teammate or shoot. Students will be working on throwing and catching skills, teamwork, communication, offensive and defensive strategies, as well as sportsmanship. We look forward to introducing this exciting fast paced game to our students with lead up activities and group games.
DECEMBER 5TH - DECEMBER 21ST
Over the next three weeks our Physical Education classes are going to be focusing on a basketball unit. We will be working on the basic components of basketball in individual, group and team lead-up activities. Our goal for this unit is to allow the students to push themselves to their own personal limitations. Allowing for students to explore at their own speed dribbling, passing, shooting and basketball strategies. Students will be participating in basketball centers, knockout activities, and culminate with a Make it Take it lead up activity.
Week 1 - 4 November 1st - December 2nd
Volleyball!!! During the month of November we are going to be working on our volleyball skills. Serving, passing, spiking, strategies and teamwork. KIS students will be working through stations, lead - up games and activities and ending with 4 square poison. During each sports unit effort is stressed over skill. We truly want to see the students trying their best and understand that results will follow. We are excited to watch the growth of our 5th and 6th grades over the next month.
Week 7 - 9 October 10th - 28th
Over the next three weeks we will be working on team work and sportsmanship games. These games will challenge our students to work together to solve problems, and to find positive outcomes even in the end result is not what they were striving to achieve.
Our 5th grade students will be working with our health professional also during this time looking at the 5 major food groups. They will be have the opportunity to try foods from each of the food groups and to learn about the healthy choices that they can make.

During this week we will also be putting up the finishing touches on our fitness testing and starting to create our leader boards with the top times and scores from the Fitnessgram testing.
